17 - DHC-6-100 C-FSCA Transwest Air LP, Prince Albert, SK

Damaged beyond repair in hangar fire at Prince Albert, SK on 15-Apr-2018. Just a few days prior, we received some photos of C-FSCA in the hangar, as seen below. This aircraft was the oldest operational Twin Otter in Canada, delivered to Shell Canada in 1966.

Flew Merauke - Horn Island, QLD - Cairns, QLD 21/22-Apr-2018, presumably for maintenance.

527 - DHC-6-300 N716JP Bald Mountain Air Service, Homer, AK

Aircraft struck a person just after becoming airborne from a sea ice strip approximately 140 miles from Deadhorse, AK on 20-Mar-2018. The aircraft was participating in ICEX 2018 exercise at the time, and it sustained significant damage to left wing and aileron.

As it was unflyable, and located on deteriorating sea ice, the choices became abandon the aircraft where it sat, or devise a plan to have it slung out from the very remote location. Over the ensuing days the engines and wings were able to be removed, and it was eventually recovered successfully from the ice by Tanalian & Northern Pioneer Helicopters.

It would not have been the first Twin Otter to succumb to being abandoned on the ice, nor would it be the first to have been unceremoniously dropped during recovery - so all in all, a good job by everyone involved.

The injured person was a civilian contractor employed by the Navy Arctic Submarine Laboratory, and amazingly he survived the incident.

A variety of pictures can be seen below, all with credit to Pete Johnson.

Nepal Airlines in Negotiations to Acquire New Twin Otters

As part of the Nepal Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation 100-day action plan, Nepal Airlines is expected to acquire DHC-6-400 aircraft. The number of units is variously reported as 4, 6 or 8. The airline is also hoping to trade their current three DHC-6-300's against the purchase.

Aurora Airlines to add Five DHC-6-400's for New Kuril Islands Operations

Courtesy of Russian Aviation Insider

Aurora Airlines, Aeroflot Group’s subsidiary active in the Far Eastern region of Russia, will receive five  DHC-6 Twin Otter 400 turboprops. They will use to launch service to Kuril Islands. Administration of Sakhalin Region, which shares the ownership of the airline (51%) with Aeroflot, reports that the shareholders have reached the decision to top up Aurora’s capital to finance the purchase of the aircraft.

The governor of the region Oleg Kozhemyako announced plans to launch direct service between Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Shikotan Island, unprecedented in history. Construction of a runway on the island is scheduled to begin before the end of this year. Construction of a new runway is also underway on Paramushir Island, in advance of the re-launch of regular connection with Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Aurora Airlines currently operates three 19-seat DHC-6s produced by Canadian manufacturer Viking Air. The aircraft can be operated off short runways, from 360 m. The Russian airlines has recently achieved a 10,000 flight hours on the type.

Currently Aurora uses Bombardier Q400 turboprops for flights across Sakhalin Region, including service to Iturup and Shikotan islands. In 2016 the airline also resumed service between Kunashir and Shikotan islands on Mil Mi-8MTV-1 helicopter.

According to Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency’s records, Aurora Airlines’ fleet includes 10 Airbus А319s, 11 Bombardier DHC-8 and three DHC-6s.

The Far Eastern region has been under special attention of the Russian government in the last years. In late 2017 prime minister Dmitriy Medvedev ordered the lifting of VAT off flights to the region. He also instructed appropriate agencies to elaborate measures aimed at fleet renewal and reconstruction of several airports in the region.

Information / Opinions Requested:

MSN 65 N8083N is seen below in Feb-1971; during the period of 1968 to 1974 it was owned by National Equipment Rental, having come off lease to Hawaii Jet Aire in Jan-1970. Current available records indicate it was with Air Indies from Feb-1970 to Jan-1974.

A reader has provided the photo, and has posed a question, which of course I would like to dig into as well. The tail appears to have a French flag? Or is it a logo which also includes the square just above, which looks like it was probably black. All three seem to be perhaps either very faded, or are in the process of being removed/over painted. Air Indies colours were generally red/black/white or red/purple - so who is the yellow (orange) scheme from?

The question is - who had it been operating for?

Msn-065-no.03-DHC-6-100-N8083N-National-Equipment-Rental-(yellow,-French-flag-on-tail),-in-February-1971---IMG_20151009_0002.jpg
N8083N-INSET.jpg

By Mar-1974 it had received a red & white Air Indies scheme as seen in the photo below.
