Viking Series 400 Twin Otter Receives Float Certification in China

Victoria, BC, September 20th , 2017: Viking Air Limited of Victoria, BC, Canada is pleased to announce that the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has approved the operation of Viking Series 400 Twin Otters equipped with Wipline® 13000 straight and amphibious floats in China.

Certification of the Series 400 Twin Otter on floats is a major milestone in developing the burgeoning seaplane market in China as it provides a proven twin-engine solution capable of profitable 19- passenger commercial operation. Prior to certification of the Series 400, anticipated growth in the Chinese seaplane market has been gradual due to the requirement that commercial operators of single-engine aircraft must limit the number of passengers to 9 and operate with two pilots, making it uneconomical to run a commercial seaplane operation.

“With over 18,000 kilometers of coastline and more than 6000 islands, China presents numerous opportunities for seaplane operations for commercial, private and government support,” commented Dominique Spragg, Viking’s vice president Strategic Planning and regional sales director for China. “China is a strong emerging market for the Viking Series 400 Twin Otter, and the seaplane segment in particular is expected to expand rapidly over the next 10 years.”

Meiya Air of Hainan Province was the first Chinese company to sign on for the Series 400 Twin Otter, ordering five float-equipped aircraft to support their seaplane flightseeing and charter operations in Sanya and the surrounding region of the South China Sea.

Reignwood Aviation Group of Beijing, China, has also made a commercial commitment to purchase up to 50 Viking Twin Otters, with the initial aircraft delivered configured as 19-passenger regional commuters with amphibious floats.

With a commitment to being the world’s premier seaplane manufacturer, and to support the rapid growth of the Chinese seaplane market, Viking has invested in the development and certification of the world’s first Level “D” full flight simulator with seaplane capability. Located at Viking’s Calgary, Alberta facility, the simulator is now fully operational and will commence student training in November 2017.

Not much in the way of specifics to report as we end off the week, rather a couple of snippets of the "coming soon" variety.

I have updated the Operator & Fleets file for the Caribbean, the change being the addition of the PJ- ... registrations for the Divi Divi Air aircraft.

Additionally, we can expect another -300 series heading from Canada to the Maldives soon,  and a -200 series for Skydiving in France.

Have a good weekend.

Website Update by Erik Johannesson

This afternoon I completed the "Support Directory" categories, which list the top suppliers and vendors that have been with Twin Otter World (Twin Otter Spotter) over the years. These folks literally make this site possible.

Also today, I added a new tab for "Available Aircraft". As with the Support Directory this is a way to thank the advertisers for their continuing support. Any Twin Otter for sale or lease can be listed here for free if you are currently a banner advertiser, or wish to become one. Banner rates can be found on the "About & Subscribe" tab.

In closing for this Thursday afternoon, my thoughts are with those of you in the path of the latest hurricane. There are many readers and Twin Otter affiliated businesses that were affected by the events in Houston, and a similar number this time in the Caribbean and Florida. I understand Winair was able to move their fleet to safety in Saint Vincent, however I doubt their facilities at Princess Juliana made it through unscathed. Good luck to all over the next few days.

Flew Calgary-Int'l, AB - Victoria, BC 06-Sep-2017; the aircraft had been previously flown from Victoria to Calgary on 09-May-2017.

Website Update by Erik Johannesson

Over the weekend I have added a tab in the links called "Support Directory". As a benefit to the existing advertisers, the Support Directory lists the top service providers to the Twin Otter industry, by specialty. Each of the entries includes address, telephone, website and location map.

The idea being, if you are in need of an aircraft to lease, an engine to buy or lease, or an avionics upgrade, the various vendors are listed alphabetically in a convenient one-stop location.

If you are a current advertiser, and you are not listed so far, don't worry, I am only about 75% done! Everyone will be there this week.

Fiji Airways Purchases Three Viking Series 400 Twin Otters by Erik Johannesson

Nasoso, Nadi, Fiji, August 24th, 2017:

Viking Air Limited of Victoria, BC, Canada and Fiji Airways, of Nadi, Fiji, have signed an agreement for three Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft for use as regional commuters servicing Fiji Airways’ domestic routes throughout the island nation. An option for one additional aircraft will also accompany the deal.

The Series 400 Twin Otters are scheduled for delivery between October 2017 and February 2018, and will be added to Fiji Airways’ existing fleet of three legacy Twin Otter aircraft based at Nadi International Airport. Fiji Airways has been operating Twin Otter aircraft for over ten years, and as Fiji’s National Airline, is strategically placed to expand the Twin Otter Series 400’s presence in the region.

Mr. Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways Group Managing Director and CEO commented: “The Twin Otter remains the aircraft of choice for our subsidiary Fiji Link’s operations to most of Fiji’s smaller airports. The Series 400 is a definite step up for our expanded Twin Otter fleet, and will allow us to increase capacity to key Fijian destinations. Customers and crew alike can look forward to enhanced comfort and operating systems on their flights.”

The Series 400 Twin Otters will be delivered as standard land planes in 19-passenger configuration, and equipped with Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 turbine engines and Honeywell Primus Apex fully integrated digital IFR avionics suite. “The team at Fiji Airways exude consummate professionalism and have been a pleasure to deal with from the outset,” said Peter Walker, Viking’s International Sales Director for Africa, Middle East & Asia Pacific. He added, “We’re thrilled to be working with such an esteemed airline, and are looking forward to future possibilities as Fiji Airways expand their Twin Otter fleet.”
