Twin Otter Update by Erik Johannesson

IKHANA Aircraft Services announces development of Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) Installation for the DHC-6 Twin Otter

IKHANA Aircraft Services (IKHANA) announces the development of an APU installation for the DHC-6 Twin Otter series. Developed for an undisclosed operator to provide supplemental electrical power generation capability in support of special missions payloads, IKHANA now offers the installation as a new enhancement product. “The electrical power now available is several magnitudes above that generated by the aircraft engines alone and is now a real option for operators needing power to support their missions,” states Mr. John Zublin President and CEO of IKHANA Aircraft Services. “The trend with special missions operators and new sensors has always pushed the limits of available electrical power; we see this APU modification as a means to help future ideas develop into real technologies.”

The modification supports installation of compact APU’s generating approximately sixty (60) SHP for electrical power generation or a supplemental bleed air source. Initially developed using a Hamilton-Sundstrand (Solar Turbines) T-62T-40C APU, the installation design is suited for other similar sized APU’s. Palletized and mounted within a fire containment box in the aft baggage compartment, the modification supports quick configuration changes allowing the APU to be easily removed within a few hours when not required for the mission. The full multimission capabilities of the Twin Otter are retained with the APU removed.

Website and Twin Otter Update by Erik Johannesson

Website Updates

Light on the blog update side for the past week as I have been focusing most of my attention on integrating the content of Twin Otter Archive into Twin Otter World. Once this is complete, it will truly be a case of a one-stop destination for Twin Otter material, current and historical.

So far I have transferred close to 90 aircraft. The move requires more than just a copy and paste, each page needs to be rebuilt, however this is also providing an opportunity to update the page when it is moved. Check out the "Archive" tab here on the site to see what has been done so far. There is a Master Index page, a Manufacturers Production Marks page, and also a Update Summary as well

Yesterday, I also moved the Series 400 Production table into the website itself, rather than relying on a PDF link. This takes one step out of the updating process. The same thing will happen with the Operators & Fleets pages, but that will take some time.

If you are currently a subscriber I'd like to encourage you to check the website regularly, as there is much to offer here. Checking the blog update is a simple one-click effort from the landing page, and gives you easy access to all the other features as well.

Lastly, for those people who have been involved with the Twin Otter over the past 50 years, and have topical photos (slides or prints) and would like to share them, just let me know via the Contact the Editor form (under About & Subscribe). I am happy to scan and return (with the scanned file) without cost - or even more pleased if anyone wants to just contribute a collection, particularly if they are slides.

Twin Otter Archive Integration

As some may have noticed, a new category tab was added on the website over the past weekend. The content of Twin Otter Archive will be transferred to Twin Otter World over the span of the next several months. Once we get further down the road, we will announce it formally. In the meantime you are welcome to check things out as the build continues. Pages and pictures become live and viewable as they are completed.

NAC Set to Acquire Viking Series 400's

Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) is expected to go to their Board of Directors shortly for approval to purchase four Viking DHC-6-400's. NAC has operated the legacy Twin Otter since 1972, but had recently begun acquiring the Chinese manufactured Y-12E as a replacement. The introduction of the Y-12E has proved to be troublesome for a variety of reasons, including an inability to handle the runway grade at some locations.

Second DHC-6-400 for SENAN in Panama by Erik Johannesson

Viking Sells 2nd Series 400 Twin Otter to Government of Panama’s Servicio Nacional Aeronaval (SENAN) Air Group

Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, October 10th, 2017:

Viking Air Limited of Victoria, British Columbia, has sold its second Series 400 Twin Otter to the government of Panama for use by its Servicio Nacional Aeronaval (SENAN) Air Group based in Cocoli, Panama. The aircraft is scheduled for delivery in December 2017, and will be utilized to support the agency’s humanitarian aid missions throughout the country.

After witnessing the operational success of their first Viking Series 400 Twin Otter, SENAN has elected to purchase a second Viking Series 400 Twin Otter to expand on the services the agency provides to the Panamanian population. SENAN is the agency within Panama’s national forces that is responsible for public security and protecting the social and economic development of Panama through use of naval and air means.

The Viking Series 400 will be equipped with standard wheel gear for its primary role as troop and cargo transport, and will also be configured for medical evacuation to support emergencies as needed. The aircraft will be the second Twin Otter to be introduced to SENAN’s operational fleet, and will join the first Viking Series 400 aircraft delivered in December 2016.

David Caporali, Viking’s Regional Sales Director for Latin America, said, “SENAN’s operational group has been impressed with the Series 400 Twin Otter’s reliability and its amazing performance when accessing the country’s short airfields. The Twin Otter has enabled the government to increase its presence in remote locations, greatly contributing to the agency’s success; the addition of a second Viking aircraft is a testament to that success.”

SENAN took delivery of their first Series 400 in December 2016, and have deployed the aircraft in key roles supporting different missions daily since the new Twin Otter program was established in January 2017.

About SENAN: The Servicio Nacional Aeronaval (SENAN) Air Group is responsible for indoctrination, training, coordination and monitoring air operations for compliance with the State’s mission to protect life, honor, property and other rights and freedoms of individuals within the Republic of Panama. SENAN is renowned for its professionalism and high operational performance, and is comprised of Airlift Squadron, Helicopter Squadron, and Air Training unit.

STC Awarded for Ikhana DHC-6-100HP/200HP™ by Erik Johannesson

IKHANA_logo.jpg
N902RT-1.jpg

IKHANA Aircraft Services Announces Twin Otter DHC-6-100HP™/-200HP™ STC providing HIGH POWER performance

IKHANA Aircraft Services (IKHANA) announces award of a new FAA STC for their latest DHC-6 Twin Otter upgrade, the RWMI DHC-6-100HP™/-200HP™. The STC is an approved performance enhancement for the DHC-6-100/-200 series replacing the original PT6A-20 engines with PT6A-27 series engines. With authorization to operate at 50 PSI (620 SHP) of available torque, the modification provides improved performance especially under hot day high pressure altitude conditions. The RWMI DHC-6-100HP™/-200HP™ matches the available power of a DHC-6-300 series, but differs from IKHANA’s RWMI DHC-6-200HG™ STC by keeping the original Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) at 11,579 pounds (5252 Kg). IKHANA’s RWMI DHC-6-200HG™ STC provides increased power and a MTOW up to 12,500 pounds (5670 Kg). “Not all DHC-6-100/-200 operators benefit from increased payload, but they all want better performance,” states Mr. John Zublin, President and CEO of IKHANA. “This upgrade also supports aircraft fleet compatibility, improves utility, and returns value to the airframe, keeping with our philosophy of providing customers with options.”

“IKHANA Aircraft Services' achievement is a testament to programs involving life extensions and upgrades, namely engine upgrades. The PT6A–27 on the legacy Twin Otter platform brings about significant performance improvements and extends the useful life of this aircraft.” States Nick Kanellias, Vice President, Marketing, for General Aviation Programs at Pratt & Whitney Canada (PWC).

Enhanced Vision System by Ikhana by Erik Johannesson

IKHANA Aircraft Services Announces Development of Enhanced Vision System (EVS) for the DHC-6 Twin Otter FAA STC number SA02649LA

IKHANA Aircraft Services (IKHANA) announces the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) award of its Enhanced Vision System (EVS) STC for the DHC-6 Twin Otter series aircraft using the Astronics Max-Viz EVS 2300 sensor.

The Max-Viz 2300 provides pilots with an unprecedented level of situational awareness and safety by enabling them to see more precisely during day or night in adverse weather conditions, such as haze, smoke, smog and light fog, even in the darkest night. “IKHANA is always looking to apply innovations that improve utility, and safety while expanding Twin Otter capabilities,” states John Zublin, President and CEO of IKHANA. “EVS offers a unique capability that fits well within the Twin Otter’s typical operating mission in remote unimproved fields or other low visibility situations. As an alternative to computer database synthetic visions systems, the EVS 2300 provides the flight crew with a real-time visual situational awareness image that results in an additional level of safety for low visibility missions.”

The Astronics Max-Viz EVS 2300 design incorporates both a camera and power supply in one unit for easy aircraft installation. The system combines a long wave infrared un-cooled thermal image blended with a visible light sensor for “seeing” LED lighting. The blended black and white, dual field of view image is presented on any cockpit video-capable display. A separate color HD-compatible camera feed (720 x 480) can be displayed in the cabin, switched on in the cockpit, or be recorded. The software for the Combined Vision System (CVS) is capable of supporting future integration with Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS). The cockpit display shows terrain, runways, taxiways, aircraft and obstacles in poor visibility conditions, including light fog, haze, smoke, brown/whiteout, light precipitation and darkness. EVS provides For further information, contact Naras “Bo” Alksninis, Director, Special Missions Sales Tel: 951-600-0009 x218; Mobile: 818.554.5906; Email: BAlksninis@IKHANAgroup.com what synthetic vision alone can’t…the real world in real time…in a package that is small, reliable and affordable.
